Latest Cake Creation

My aunt Leigh Anne and I teamed up to make a flower pot cake for my aunt Kelley's birthday, as she is quite a gardener. I baked the cakes & stacked them w/ raspberry filling, she made the molding chocolate & got the decorations, and we came together to decorate the cake. It was our first time working with molding chocolate, but we think it looked pretty similar to a terracotta pot. We were pretty happy with the finished product.

For the most part it was a pretty simple design. I would bake three 6 inch cakes, and stack them with filling in between. Be sure to pipe a rim of buttercream frosting around the layer before adding the filling. This will keep the filling from oozing out when you stack the cakes. Then add a crumb coat of buttercream frosting to seal in any loose crumbs and put it in the freezer to let the crumb coat firm up. Then it is very easy to roll out the molding chocolate and lay it over the cake. Molding chocolate is just made from chocolate and Karo syrup. However, I would look up a reliable recipe online. We had gotten a recipe from a lady who works at a cake shop in Seattle, but it didn't come together quite right apparently. But with the miracle of the internet it was salvaged, and just look at the finished product!

Isn't the butterfly a cute touch?
