The Last Great Race on Earth
March 7th was the official start of the 2009 Iditarod. It is a race of approximately 1150 miles of rough artic terrain. The teams of 12-16 dogs travel from Anchorage to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast. Mushers enter from all sorts of countries.
The Iditarod trail began as a mail and supply route. Then in 1925 when Diphtheria threatened the population of Nome, serum had to be brought in by mushers, as there was no other way to get it there. That is way it is also known as "The Great Race of Mercy".
We attended the official start of the race this year in Willo, AK, and it was definitely an experience to remember!

Fur Rondy 2009
Last month, end of February/early March, was our first Fur Rondy celebration.
Fur Rondezvous is a 74 year tradition in Anchorage. In the 30's Vern Johnson decided to organize a 3 day festival to coincide with when the miners and trappers came into town to trade their "winter's yield".
It has emerged into a week long party with fun activities that are uniquely Alaskan, just hearing about them makes me laugh. Here are some examples:
-Snowman Building Competition
-The Blanket Toss
Let me explain...

This is how the natives used to spot for whales.
-The Frostbite Footrace/Fun Run
(Some people dress up in really funny costumes for this event.)
-Crab Races: The Crustacean 500

You get the picture.
-Reindeer Sausage Eating Contest
-The Miners & Trappers Ball

Here is a vivid example of the appropriate attire.
-Snowshoe Softball
-The Outhouse Races

No joke, the description of the event states, "don't be number two in the race to the finish line". "Get out your porto-potties, strap a couple skiis to the bottom of it... to prove you truly are King or Queen of your Throne."
-The Melodrama
They put on an old fashioned melodrama, and they hand out popcorn for you to throw.
-The Running of the Reindeer
(It is the 3rd clip in this video.)
The Festival was coordinated with the start of the Iditarod this year as one of the final events.
Ahh Alaska, there certainly is no place quite like it!
